Sewing Machine Pin Cushions- Two Ways

IMG_3171.png

These pin cushions are perfect for the efficient sewer! They are great as a first project with a new machine, or an experienced sewer who likes to sew new things! I’ve even gifted a few TO craft friends of mine.

One thing that makes this project so beginner friendly is that there is SEW much wiggle room in the measurements. Below I’m going to give exact measurements, but if you have a scrap of fabric with similar measurements, USE it!!

Materials needed:

  • Sewing Machine

  • Scrap Fabric

  • Iron

  • Elastic or ribbon

  • Stuffing

Optional:

I’m going to show two different ways! Pick and combine the methods you like best! There are even more ways to make them than I’m showing!

First chose if you have two smaller scraps to sew together or one larger one to fold in half.

First stitch down the elastic to make sure it stays in place.

A little Washi tape will keep the elastic down.

Put the second piece on top with the pretty side facing down. Sew down each side, making sure to back stitch at the ends.

Next we need to go to the ironing board and get ready to turn this inside out

This project was small enough that I could slide it into my finger, pinch, then roll the rest over it.

A little rough, but we can iron it out.

Next we’re going to fold in the ends of the tube a little more than a quarter inch. It’s not precise.

Pressing in a little on each side makes it easier to create that hem (I didn’t want to get my tripod out for one picture. Pretend there are two hands)

Now we’ll iron all that flat. Ironing will also keep the hem folded inwards.

I got this much fluff out, but it ended up being the EXACT amount I needed. How. Awesome 🤩

Stuff small pieces at a time, using a stick or ruler to help you reach the bottom.

Stuff until you reach almost the top. Then stitch it closed like we did the other side. Forgot to take a picture. Use your imagination 👀

Next Method!

With the pretty side down, we are going to fold a hem on both SHORT sides. I’m a cheater and enjoy the smart uses of hemming tape.

Iron 1/4 inch over to create a hem. Only fold once.

Sew down the side that isn’t a fold. Trim your corners with out cutting your stitches.

Turn inside out, iron with the seam (where you have sewn) in the middle. (So it’s hidden )

Sew down one side like we did the other one, sticking the ribbon in the middle before you sew over that place.

Be sure to back stitch at the beginning, end and over the ribbon. I don’t always backstitch over the ribbon/elastic 🤷🏻‍♀️

And that’s it!
You’re done!

The ribbon ones just tie around the back! I hope you’re better at bows than me 😂

The elastic ones are a little tricky to put on, but I like them. Start with the elastic on the right side of your presser foot.

Then start pulling it over the machine with the elastic on the bottom.
